Busy does NOT make you more important
Do you ever feel like you are participating in a competition that you do not quite recall signing up for? Meet up with a friend, family member or co-worker and suddenly you are thrown into the arena, comparing whose life is more chaotic.
Busy, it seems, alludes a feeling of importance. It presupposes that you are in demand, needed or that you are miraculously achieving beyond anything humanly possible. However, the reality is a far cry from any such notion. Being busy means that you are locked into a string of events that are simply not healthy or sustainable – long term.
“To me, ‘busy’ implies that the person is out of control of their life.” – Derek Sivers
Although life may demand certain tasks, responsibilities and actions from us, it is OK to say no, step away, and prioritse which of these are truly significant. You are an important person no matter what is on the agenda for the day, week, month or year.
“Sometimes our stop-doing list needs to be bigger than our to-do list.” – Patti Digh
Remember that importance can be found in the space – miles away from ‘busy’.
